I absolutely love going out for brekky on a Sunday. Bless my dear husband, but he is never all that keen. Fortunately he usually takes off on his bike which leaves my daughter and I to sample the breakfast delights around Adelaide. I thought I'd bring to you this vital information, as unfortunately many cafes find it hard to cook a good breakfast. Far too often the eggs are greasy, the toast is a piece of white sandwich loaf and they fail to include a bircher. So alas, a new page to the blog has been born. I hope this helps you to fulfill your precious weekends. At the very least you can rely on knowing where the good fruit toast is served as this is a mandatory order by my daughter.
Over the next few weeks I'll add some more to this list but to kick start off ........
Tin Cat Cafe
Rundle Street, Kent Town
Down the quite end of Rundle Street lies the ever quirky and rustic Tin Cat Cafe. The cafe has been around for sometime now but recently underwent some minor interior changes and formed a new breakfast menu.
The interior of the cafe has a relaxed retro feel, and the courtyard garden out the back is beautiful in a eclectic garden party kind of way. Perfectly shaded, funky lanterns and table and chair sets from an old school diner.
The breakfast menu is full of every bacon and egg combo you can possibly imagine, eggs benedict, florentine, pacific, just eggs, bacon and eggs, vego eggs, the works..... you name it, it's on there, and separated into its own title. There is also a fabulous bircher muesli, crepes, waffles, fruit etc. I enjoyed the Kangaroo Island free range eggs (poached to perfection) with SA red gum smoked bacon on artisian toast ($14). The toast was thick and hearty, the eggs were perfect and the bacon was nice but for some reason rolled itself into thick rolls which was fine when picked apart, but not so good when I ate a mouthful of thick meaty bacon, bluur!
The bircher muesli ($14) on the menu is fantastic. Soft, mushy, and a beautiful mix of tender berries through it. My daughter of course had the fruit toast ($8) and I was pleasantly surprised at how it came out with a side of gorgeous looking strawberries, peaches and plums. Unfortunately the toast itself was a bit burnt on the edges but aside from that it was all good.
The Tin Cat Cafe also has a very tempting range of exotic and intriguing teas, fabulous coffee and beautiful freshly squeezed juices of varying combinations.
I'll certainly be back at the Tin Cat Cafe for breakfast. It has exactly the right relaxed whimsical atmosphere for a lazy breakfast, the outside courtyard has a small area for kids to amuse themselves, and of course the food was great.
